Prevalence and assessment of risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome among health workers in lagos university teaching hospital (LUTH)

Temitope Alao Sanni  Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Lagos, Nigeria

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors leading to cardiovascular diseases. Currently, its prevalence is reportedly increasing with associated increase in mortality rate among the adult population. However, the assessment of metabolic syndrome and the predictors among adults in Nigeria is less studied. Hence, this study aims to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome as well as the determinants among health workers in LUTH. This study is a hospital based cross-sectional study among 200 health workers selected using simple random sampling technique. Demographic characteristics and clinical information such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and blood pressure will be measured along with the estimations of high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG) and blood glucose. The dietary pattern and physical activity level of the respondents will also be assessed. Descriptive statistics will be used for the variables and the predictors assessed using chi-square and logistic regression model. Statistical associations will be set at a level of p<0.05.
